Naked Raku
Yet another variation of Raku, it
differs only slightly from "slip-resist Raku".
In this technique, a layer of Raku-glaze is added on top of the slip. The
"slip" acts here like a kind of "separation layer" between
the clay and the glaze, and prevents that the glaze will melt to the surface of
the clayobject.
The kiln is fired to a temperature of roughly 850-900 degrees Celsius, untill
the glaze starts to "bubble". This process must be visually watched
through a peephole in the kiln. If OK, all objects are removed from the kiln by
tongs.
When the hot clayobject is "reduced" in the smoke-bin, the smoke and
tar will penetrate into the "cracks" of the glaze, and go right
through the sliplayer into the clay, and leave behind irregular crack-like
patterns on the surface.
The layer of slip and glaze will then also "peel off", or has to be
removed with water, showing the patterns created on the "bare" or
"nude" clay. Hence the name "naked". Various colour
possibbillities by applying (before polishing) sliplayer containing stains or
oxides, or by using coloured clay.
On those parts where NO glaze is applied, the clay turns black.
After thoroughly cleaning and drying, a tiny layer of beeswax is polished into
the finished clay object. This gives a matt shiny finish, embellishing the
surface of the "naked clay".
Naked Raku
De pot wordt gedraaid, afgedraaid en gepolijst, zodat de huid mooi glad is. Wanneer ze volledig droog is wordt ze een eerste keer gebakken bij een temperatuur van 950°C in een elektrische oven. (biscuitbak) Er wordt een sliblaag over de pot aangebracht en daarop, op het ongebakken slib, een laag glazuur. De pot wordt in de gasoven verhit tot 900°C, met de tang uit de oven gehaald en in een rookvat gestopt met brandbaar materiaal. Door de temperatuurschok, gaat het glazuur craqueleren. De barstjes worden door de rook ingekleurd. Bij afkoeling van de pot, gaat de sliblaag meer krimpen dan de pot en komt daardoor los van de wand. De wand komt opnieuw bloot (Naked), maar waar de rook door het glazuur en de sliblaag kon dringen is een grimmige tekening ontstaan.
